  • Classic BBC Radio Theme ~ Shipping Forecast (Sailing By)

This is "Sailing By" composed by Ronald Binge in 1963, and performed by the Alan Perry/William Gardner Orchestra, and is the version used by the BBC for its late night shipping forecast. Sailing By is played every night on BBC Radio 4 at around 00:45hrs before the late Shipping Forecast. Its tune is repetitive, assisting in its role of serving as a signal for sailors tuning in to be able to easily identify the radio station. It also functions as a buffer — depending on when the final programme before closedown finishes, Sailing By (or part of it) is played as a 'filler' as the shipping forecast starts at 00:48hrs precisely. The initial reason for its introduction was because of the indeterminate finish time for the preceding Midnight News, leading to filling music being played until the...

  • TOP ship in distress in the storm

Swimming in storm conditions, despite strict requirements to design and construction of the modern sea vessels possessing the big durability of the case and high seaworthy qualities remains a hard and responsible task. The control of the vessel during a storm demands from crew and first of all from boatmasters of knowledge and the accounting of all types of impact of storm conditions on the vessel. Influence of a gale and excitement can bring to the vessel large damages if it is properly not prepared for a meeting with a storm and if maneuvering during a storm is followed by wrong actions of boatmasters and first of all the captain. Good sea practice demands that irrespective of the navigation area and a weather forecast the vessel before an exit in flight was ready to any changes of weath...

Good sea practice demands that irrespective of the navigation area and a weather forecast the vessel before an exit in flight was ready to any changes of weather. Therefore preparation for swimming in storm weather has to begin in port from the moment of receiving a trip task. By drawing up the cargo plan it is provided the general and local durability of the case of the vessel and its seaworthy qualities both at the time of an exit from port, and at an expenditure of stocks during all flight. In case of flight with several points of calling in which cargo operations have to be performed, placement of freight has to provide possibility of fastening of freights for the purpose of safety on transition to the following item of appointment or if necessary (in the unprotected ports) the terminations of cargo operations and an exit to the high sea for the period of a storm. Before an exit from port boatmasters have to examine a long-term weather forecast, and in the absence of the phototelegraphic equipment — a series of weather maps for previous days.
