This is "Sailing By" composed by Ronald Binge in 1963, and performed by the Alan Perry/William Gardner Orchestra, and is the version used by the BBC for its late night shipping forecast. Sailing By is played every night on BBC Radio 4 at around 00:45hrs before the late Shipping Forecast. On the ships bridge ,the officer of the watch tunes into BBC Radio 4 and the distinctive sound of "Sailing By" lets him know he's on time and on the right frequency. Then he has to note down the details of the weather forecast for the sea areas in which the ship might expect to journey though within the next 24 -48 hrs, in this case THAMES, DOVER, WIGHT ,PORTLAND . The New Year's Cruise carrying over 4,000 passengers was caught in a violent winter storm on the way back from the Bahamas. The ship was constantly rocking for 3 days! Although the ship is capable of handling such a storm, we saw some people sleeping in the hallways because of water leaking into their rooms from the balcony doors (or because some thought the ship was going to capsize.) We even saw a family walking around with their life jackets. Well, it snowed today! +1 for Storm Glass forecast accuracy. The Storm Glass was first invented in the mid 1700's, and soon made it's way into ships and harbors around Europe to help give warning of approaching bad weather. It gained the most fame through Admiral FitzRoy who used a Storm Glass on the voyage in which he and Darwin traveled to the Galápagos Islands. As such, the instrument is sometimes called a 'FitzRoy Storm Glass'. Due to the use of vodka rather than pure ethanol and water, the proportions I use to make the Storm Glass in my video breaks somewhat from the traditional ratios, but the recipe is balanced to achieve the same effect as the original. Fortunately, the chemical solution does not require extreme precision to work properly. Composition: Vodka, 100 Proof (50% Ethanol) - 300 mL Camphor - 28g (1oz) Potassium Nitrate - 10g Ammonium Chloride - 10g Some of these chemicals may be difficult to obtain in certain parts of the world, but if Camphor can be found it's possible that Potassium Nitrate or Ammonium Chloride could be substituted for other soluble salts, such as Sodium Chloride (I have not tested this). To read a Storm Glass for weather prediction, here is a description from the book Pharmaceutical Formulas by Peter MacEwan, published in 1908: ------------------------------------------------ "The changes of the solution signify the following: Clear liquid : Bright weather. Crystals at bottom : Thick air, frost in winter. Dim liquid with small stars : Thunderstorms. Large flakes : Heavy air, overcast sky, snow in winter. Threads in upper portion of liquid : Windy weather. Small dots : Damp weather, fog. Rising flakes which remain high : Wind in the upper air regions. Small stars : In winter on bright, sunny days, snow in one or two days. The higher the crystals rise in the glass tube in winter the colder it will be." ------------------------------------------------ The crystals within a Storm Glass will dissolve and solidify all on their own as the temperature changes day to day. If you would like to start fresh with completely clear liquid and watch the crystals form rapidly, the glass can be placed in a bowl of warm water for 10 minutes to dissolve old crystals completely. Remember to loosen the lid before doing so to prevent excess pressure from building inside. Asher Quinn (Asha) plays 'Islands,' a piano piece from his album "Sketches of Innocence," and sets further filmed footages to the BBC Shipping Forecast later in the video! Track download/CD available here ~ http://asherquinn.co.uk/sketchesofinnocence.htm 'Islands' is a lightly orchestrated piano piece from my instrumental compilation album "Sketches of Innocence." We filmed for it in Orkney and Caithness in January, braving the elements and the elemental beings in this most northerly outpost of Britain! The harbour scenes are from Scrabster, near Thurso; and St. Margaret's Hope and Stromness on Orkney. The islands include Stroma and Orkney itself, and the standing stones are at the Ring of Brodgar on Orkney. These giant stones are concretised protecting Gods, who come to life on new year's eve to bring renewal to the islands. If we're not awake, the protecting Gods in us can fossilise, and not be able to come to life and bring renewal. Keeping the Gods alive in us is done through mindfulness, gratitude, ritual and animation of soul. If we're alive with good intent and honour, then the Gods can find a host in our being, and come to dwell! In certain shamanic cultures, if the children are sick, the first thing the good doctor does (the Shaman) is to encourage them to dance, and to re-animate! Then the spirits who left, return. Hence the term dis-spirited, meaning depressed. These islands, plus all the ancient landscapes of Hibernia and Iberia (down to north western Spain), and Newfoundland, formed the outer circle of Atlantis, a continent now submerged beneath the northern Atlantic. It was in the time of Atlantis that the human being came out of the sea and onto dry land, and began to form a consciousness capable of expressing and integrating the Divine through humanity. This spirituality was cultivated by the Druid mystery schools, who knew of the Christ consciousness long before the advent of Jesus of Nazareth. The Christ consciousness (from the Greek 'Christos', meaning anointed) was none other than personal awareness of, and communion with, the Divine, beyond the group soul or tribal law. All through my life as a Brit in these islands, I've been aware of the BBC Shipping Forecast, from when I was a child! This piece of music, along with filming the sea and scenery of Orkney and Caithness, allowed me to honour the Shipping Forecast by setting it to film here. The BBC has broadcast a nightly shipping forecast for over 50 years at precisely 00.48 hours, on Radio 4. It’s a national institution, loved by many Brits both at home and abroad… an essential part of the bedtime ritual for many! Designed to help safeguard sailors, wayfarers and fisherman in our often stormy waters, each region from Shetland down to Biscay receives a detailed synopsis of the prevailing weather conditions. There’s something deeply lyrical, poetic and magical about the forecast, as if it invokes the guardian spirits of the sea… it’s almost a lullaby or a mantra in effect, constellating a sense of protection and well-being in the safe harbour of a cosy bed, whilst our valiant maritime warriors do battle with the coiled sea-serpents of the waves, who spit sleet and create a monstrous ocean foment with their thrashing tails. My thanks to Maggie who edits my films, and invited us up to Thurso where she lives, and to Phil Thornton who played lead guitar on the studio track.

Ever wondered how the shipping forecast was being received out at sea ? Well, here it is onboard a ship anchored in a sheltered anchorage off the Isle of Wight,UK . This information will be used by the ships Captain in deciding when to heave up the anchor and continue on passage after sheltering from the weather. This film is a tribute to all professional seafarers who continue to record the BBC Shipping Forecast in this way, 24/7 -365 days a year in order to stay safe out at sea.

The BBC Radio 4 shipping forecast, a British institution and still relevant for today's mariners. I find the narration has a hypnotizing quality, and I hope this film translates that feeling. The shipping forecast is broadcast on BBC Radio 4, three times a day.

This is "Sailing By" composed by Ronald Binge in 1963, and performed live by the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by John Wilson. This theme is used by the BBC for its late night shipping forecast on Radio 4. I'm sure you'll agree it is a beautiful piece of music and sounds even better live and in full.

And now the ASMR Shipping Forecast, issued by ASMRadio on behalf of the Tingles and Eargasms Agency at 0048 today. **Whispers / Mouth Sounds / Music** "The Shipping Forecast is immensely popular with the British public; it daily attracts listeners in the hundreds of thousands – far more than actually require it. Peter Jefferson, who read the Forecast for 40 years until 2009, says that he received letters from across the UK saying that the 0048 broadcast helped them get to sleep after a long day." For more info on the forecast: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shipping_Forecast 2:37 Musical intro ends ("Sailing By" composed by Ronald Binge 1963, performed by the Alan Perry/William Gardner Orchestra) 15:48 Broadcast ends with the Greenwich Time Signal, leading into some background/history. –––––––––––––––––––– Go easy, my first upload evah!

Dedicated to all British Merchant Seaman and Fishermen who have waited on the bridge of a ship or in the wheelhouse of a fishing boat at 0040 hrs in the dark of a stormy night waiting for the BBC Shipping Weather Forecast to come on with more good news for the next 24 hours at sea . I think we can all agree that this theme is the most unapplicable music in the middle of a gale ! In stormy weather and high seas it should be changed to Diana Ross "Ain't no Mountain High enough" or The Doors "Riders of the Storm'
